Mohican 50

Writing a race report after a race usually gets me pretty excited. But here I am about 1.5 weeks out from Mohican and Im still unsure how I feel about my race. Finishing 3rd and taking home some prize money is nothing to be ashamed about! I thought I had a pretty solid race (compared to VT.) But I think I might have underestimated this course, thinking that VT 50 would have been tougher. Not the case AT ALL!

Jess and I headed up late evening on Thursday to meet Court and Emily at the state park. Reaching our campsite around 9 we were ready to relax and set up camp. We talked and bullshitted for a while with Court and his parents before bed. We got up around 8:30 AM on Friday and went on a little trot on the trails with the girls. Nice and easy for about 3 miles on some of the course. The rest of the day we just fiddled around in town (for breakfast and dinner), headed to the pool for a bit, and then headed to Mohican Adventures (Start/Finish) to pick up numbers and to drop off drop bags. Got back to campsite and Court and I went over a little race strategy with his mom. She, Courts dad, Emily and Jess would be our handlers on the course. We then got to bed a decent hour, but 3:45AM alarm came early.

We got to the Start around 4:15 and used the facilities and got our water bottles ready. Talked alittle bit with few of the other 100 and 50 milers getting ready to start at 5AM. Race got started on time and we were off! There were a few people that took off like crazy but Court and I remained leveled headed and kept to our plan. (if you probably couldnt tell Court and I planned on running together the whole way until one of us couldnt hang) We did probably start faster than we anticipated but thats normal, with the nerves and the adrenaline pumping! First couple of miles were in the dark and we made use of our headlamps. Few guys out there were with out them and I have no idea how they made it with out breaking an ankle because the trail was pretty rocky in places. We got through the 1st aid station with no problems, we both topped of our water bottles and continued on. The next aid station (firestation)  was alittle bit of a haul about 6 miles. We finally got to see the girls and Courts parents. We dropped off our headlamps and I grabbed some food. I was def determined to work on my nutrition on this race. The next part of the trail was probably the hardest section, there was alot of up and down and also a part where you ran up this creek bed jumping from down limb to down limb like a cat. That creek ran you into a waterfall that had you climbing up tree roots that were about 10 ft tall. Talking about a slowing your pace down! We ended up seeing our crew again before heading down the damn(see pic) to our next aid station. We hit the covered bridge aid station in high spirits, getting some fluids and food. Getting to the next aid station at mile 21-ish seemed like it took forever! Alot of this trail was covered with pineneedles which seemed to pad the trail and make you feel like you had some bounce in your step. We came to our next aid station and they told us it as only 5 miles to the start. At this point I was alittle worried cause I was figuring we would finish the 1st loop (26.7 miles) at around 3:45 but it was gonna be closer to 4:00. So we both said screw going for time, just enjoy the rest of the race. This section was a def tough, pretty rocky trails and alot of up and downs, especially towards the end of the loop. Finally we got to the road where I knew it would take us to the start. Saw the 1st place 100 miler in front of us and then we saw Courts dad takin pics. We finally got done with our 1st loop and glad to be there and see our peeps! Jess got me reapplied with BodyGlide and got me my ipod (didnt plan on using it but just incase.) Court and I got our nutrition together and on we went for our 2nd (shorter) loop.

Second loop started a little rough, Court and I both were feeling our legs pretty good and having to climb a bit didnt help either. Court took a nasty spill and thought he broke his wrist. He stopped for a minute and so did I to make sure everything was ok. He thought he was gonna have to drop but didnt! (MAN SHIT) Finally got the next aid station and refilled bottle and took food. At this point I was def going through my fluids alot quicker. I concentrated on taking coke as well for a little sugar boost. The next part of the trail was to the firestation again. This felt like it to forever as well! Court fell alittle behind in this section. At one point I thought I might be going the wrong way cause I didnt see anyone and it just seemed like it took so long. Ended up seing courts dad in the woods taking pics, so that got me little wound up. Got up to the aid station and saw Jessie and she asked me if I needed anything and I responded with "I need new legs" haha. Later after the race she said I didnt look to happy at this point! As I was leavin the aid station I looked back to see if Court made it but didnt see hime, so I figured from then on I would have to get through this on my own. This next part of the race was shorter than the 1st loop cause we didnt have to through the section with climbing the roots and creek. It was only 2 miles until the covered bridge aid station, so I got there pretty quick. When I arrived at there I was suprised to see the 2nd place 50 miler. He was an older gent but quick. Once he saw me coming in he took off. I didnt worry much, so I got my things together with my nutrition. This aid station was also where my drop bag was so I decided to change my shirt. I was planning on changing my shoes but decided against it. I remained calm and headed out of aid station cause I knew I was gonna catch the 2nd place eventually. Which I did about a mile after the aid station, he told me good job and I the same. I was really focusing on drinking and consuming some calories, I knew I would need them towards the end. Got to the final aid station and topped of my bottle and grabbed a PB&J sqaure and some coke and took off. If I could just hold on I would finish 2nd! Well as quickly 2nd place came, it went quickly as well too! I got passed about 3.5 miles from the finish.... Total mind fuck! I felt defeated but I was just pluggin along to get to the finish. The last 2 miles was just me on auto pilot. Finally got to the road and felt a little boost of energy but not much. Saw Emily and Courts parents at the top of the road cheering. Made my way past them to the finish! Crossed the line with my watch saying 7:58. As I crossed the line the announcer said 6:50????? I was like uh? Well the official results came out and it had me just over 8:00:50. So I say sub 8! ha!

Overall I felt better than I did at the VT 50. It was def a more technical course on a hotter day as well. Still learning on what Im doing out there and trying to piece together a great race. Next up is the Hallucination 100 miler Sept 7. Alot of work needs to be done for this!

GNAW BONE!!!

Have to say this was one tough course at Gnaw Bone! This was my first 50K and I will say that my second one will be easier, hopefully.  Was completely happy with my race, felt in control most of the time and felt strong considering only having 6 days of rest after running (paced the 3:10 group) the full marathon at the Flying Pig. Ran a 4:27 on a course that was 75% trail running and 25% trail blazing! Was told I got the course record but not 100% sure about that yet.

We headed up to Brown County State Park early Friday afternoon.  Got up to the cabin about 3 ish and headed out for a shake out run. Then headed to packet pick up at the start/finish line and headed to the grocery store for some food. Got back to the cabin about 6 and by that time everyone else was showing up. We had a total of about 15 people that were participating in mostly the 100k relay but also the Marathon and 10K races. After dinner I had a few beers along with a lot of water. Didn’t get great sleep had to sleep in the bathroom on the floor to get some rest cause people were still up partying till 1 AM. Court, Smitty and I got up at 5:00 AM to get to the start by 5:45 for a 6:15 start.

First .75 mile was flat and on a gravel road that ended onto an uphill trail that wasn’t exactly a runnable trail. It climbed about 2 miles on an empty like creek bed with a lot of mud and down trees that I had to jump.  Legs felt a little tight during this part which had me worried a tad but as soon as we got to the top we got onto a well packed trail that I was able to actually run on. I had a 50 miler running along with me for about 2 miles until he dropped off, which left me in the lead all by myself.  Early on I was trying to concentrate on taking a lot of fluids in, which I thought I did an excellent job the whole race. Made sure to take Gu’s at the aid stations as well. The next few miles were not that exciting but I do remember quite a few steps on this course that were unexpected. I know I was moving at a good clip but was just trying to stay relaxed at the same time cause I figured my legs would soon become fatigued. Around mile 18 I saw Courts( he was doing marathon) mom at the aid station. She blurted out something about just having fun on the next part, which I wasn’t exactly sure by what she meant, so I just smiled and gave a big thumbs up DUDE!!!! Well I soon would realize what she meant. I was following the pink flags that I was supposed to follow and just like that the pink flags dove right off the trail into the woods. No visible trail was there! WTF!!!!! I sort of stopped and recollected my thoughts and wondered if someone got on the course and fucked with the flags. But with no one being around for clarification I continued on following pink ribbons on the trees. This went on for about 2 miles until I came up to spot where I couldn’t see the next ribbon. I stopped looked around and then I started to run back to the last ribbon. I stopped there looked around for I know was about 5 min. Still couldn’t see any more ribbons I remember yelling  “SERIOUSLY???”  It wasn’t a sec after I yelled that I looked up this huge ridge and saw another ribbon.  On top of being frustrated I now have to climb this huge ridge…… when I say climb I mean pulling myself up with roots and trees and basically anything I could get my hands on.  Finally got to the top of this ridge but the hill kept on going up. Got to a set of steps in which I decided to just walk up. At the top of those steps I saw Courts mom again with a huge grin on her face just laughing and she asked me “How was that?” My answer… “BULL SHIT!!!!!” The next 2 miles were on paved roads which I was ecstatic about, I was finally about to open stride and feel like a runner again!!! Hit another aid station and filled water bottle up with ½ Gatorade and ½ Water.  Pretty much up till the last 2 miles the rest of the course was on horse trails that were semi muddy and uneven but was still able to keep pace. Quads and hammys were definitely starting to go slowly. Any slight misstep set them off pretty good. About mile 29 the trail ended at a huge ass downhill that resembled a ski slope. The downhill ended into a creek which was the last mile of the race. Water was shin high and hard to move through but for some reason it was refreshing. I started to see more and more people (relay runners) in the creek so I knew I was getting close to the finish. Headed off the bank of the creek and saw the huge red barn that was near the finish line so I picked pace up and finished hard. Coming across the line at 4:27 the lady working the shoot looked at me and said “wow we weren’t expecting you for another 30-45 min. I took that as a compliment until she asked “are you sure you hit all the aid stations?” She then proceeded to call and make sure I did. After about 15 min they finally approved my victory and gave me my bone and metal! They did apologize for not believing me and of course I forgave them.

Overall a solid effort that I am happy about! Now for the 50 miler!

New Training Life!!!!!

For the first time in the last year or so I feel like I have a fire in my belly to train like I use to! I have missed that feeling soooo much that I wasn't feeling like myself. I have plenty of races coming up soon that I have every intention to push my hardest at each one and not pussy foot through it like I have. Since 8 Tuff is over I have been putting full force into ultra training. Coming up in 13 days is the Flying Pig marathon which I am pacing the 3:10 group. I def jumped on this opportunity cause the following Sat I will be doing my first 50K at the Dances with Dirt in Gnaw Bone Indiana. This will be a good challenge especially mentally. My body should be pretty tired from the marathon and then coming back in 6 days to do a 50k will test me. June 16 will be the Mohican 50 miler and then Sept 7th in the Hallucination 100 miler. So I do have my season planned out and ready to roll!

As far a training has been going, well not bad at all. Have been concentrating more on long mileage which I think I'm improving alot on since Vermont 50. Have alot of 20 milers under my belt along with a 29 miler. The 29 miler took place last Sunday on 4-15. I ran from my place up to Jasons to meet him and Grace. Then we did a 14 mile loop through Mariemont and down by Lunken and back up Delta where I dropped them back off at Jasons. I then continued my way back home by myself. I made my way through the overlook like I have a billion other times but this time didn't pan out the same way. As I came out of the overlook and made a left towards the conservatory I was bit by a dog running with its owner. It got me in the right calf pretty deep. So deep blood just instantly started pouring out. This was about mile 26 into my run, so I was def not in the right state of mind. Stupid of me I did not get her info, but I just unleashed a series of f-bombs in her direction! She was very sorry and def shaken up so I proceeded to tell her not to worry about it. At this point I was determined to finish my run, so I decided to start running again. I made my way down through the park where the must have been a race going on cause I came up on a bunch of walkers. As I ran past them, a few of them shouted "hey man, your bleeding pretty bad!" knowing this already I was scared to look down. I made it all the way back to the store and saw a buddy of mine driving past. He saw me signal for him and he came an picked me up and took me home. I ended up getting 4 stitches and a Tetanus shot. Running for the last week has been a challenge. Ive been favoring my right leg therefor my left leg (knee) has been feeling sore. Although yesterday I did a 15 mile trail run and I feel alot better. So I think Ill be good for the upcoming week of training and for the Pig!

One thing that I will start working on after the 50K is done is more up tempo long runs and maybe a few speed workouts. Not talking about 200 or 400's repeats but more like 1600 or 3200 repeats. Even though most of my races are LONG, I still need to have that speed. I believe this will help in the ultras as well. Hopefully Court (also doing the Mohican 50) and I will get a chance to go down to Tenn again to get some good trail work in. The pic below is the Pinnacle in Tenn where we start and the ridge with the fog is where we run out. Beautiful views!

2012

Well it is a new year now and I have alot on my plate for this upcoming year. Mostly concentrating on ultra but Ill throw a few "normal" races in there as well. So far for this year I have 2 races that are already paid for. I have 8 Tuff Miles coming up in feb and then the Runwood Stock 100 miler in Sept. So the rest is up in the air but I def do have alot more in mind.

I might have a trail marathon in Indy coming up at the end of this month but its still up in the air. Its pretty crazy to think that I can just do a marathon at anytime but I have been doing some longer runs in training. I ran 20 miles on Christmas day and then did 30 miles with amanda on NYE (my birthday), we did 30 miles for my 30th birthday.

8 Tuff is set and ready to go. I did this race last year and really want to beat my time of 51:38. Its a very "tuff" course cause of the up hills at the beginning and then the down hills at the end. We have been doing our usualy Wed night run from our Newport Store and up through MT Adams and hitting all the hills around there. We did that last year and seem to help. A few of us will be headed to TN/KY to run some hills(mountains) in a week or so. Hopefully that will give us an edge come Feb.

April 1st im thinking about doing the Fools 50k near Cleveland. Its a trail ultra. Have not done a 50k yet but I think I could compete farely well in it.

Flying Pig Full could be a possibility on May 6th.

In mid June 16th I might be doing th Mohican 50 miler up in Ohio as well. I have seen this course last year when amanda and I went a paced Chuck for the 100 miler. This will be my second 50 miler if I choose to do it. I think I have a better idea on how to tackle a race like this now. Hopeully Im right!

Then on Sept 7th I will be doing the Run woodstock 100 miler in Pickney MI. Dont really know how to tackle this but Ill try. Amanda will be doing this with me, she actually challenged me to a 100 miler. Even though it seems to be that Im the current underdog, I think I can prevail. But its all about nutrition on this race. Either way its gonna be fun!

So there it is thats my thoughts about which races I have set and in mind so far. Im sure there will be additions and/or changes. So until then...........

Winter Training and Races

Well about a month and few weeks after VT50 I am back to 70 mile weeks and running every day. Legs def took some time to get back to somewhat normal. And still to this day I still feel my legs getting tired more quickly than normal. So I'm taking my time on easy runs and making sure I'm running EASY. But I can't wait to be doing some quality workouts for some races in the winter. So far my schedule is the Thanksgiving Day race. I will also be doing the Frostbite 5 miler on New Years Day. One day after my g'day. Hopefully I can keep it under control on the 31st. Then on to 8 Tuff Miles in the end of Feb on St. John in the Virgin Islands. I am also looking to do a 50k sometime as well.

Even though I have a few races that I'm going to do but I'm concentrating mostly on 8 Tuff. We actually have about 30 people going down from the tri-state area. We basically go down on Thursday and race on Saturday and then we party balls the rest of the time. Last year I did a have a pretty good race considering I have never done it before. I finished 4th overall with a time of 51:38. Now for most of you reading this and doing the math it comes out to a 6:10 pace. Which isn't all that fast normally, But this course is far from ordinary. It's a 8.6 mile race with about 1500 feet of climbing. And thats in the first 5 miles! Yes it's pretty much straight up hill and then the last 3.6 is straight downhill that kills your quads. It actually took longer to recover from this race than it did from my marathon. But most of all it's just a hell of a good time.

As far as the other races go they will be just tune ups. The Thanksgiving Day race will be interesting cause I haven't done hardly any good speed work. This race usually goes bad for me. But as usual I will give it a go and try to break 35 min which I never have done.... I know SAD but ohwell. And as for the Frostbite 5 miler I should have some quality runs behind me and hopefully beat my last year time. Which right now I can't really remember what I ran maybe high 26 min I think. But I'm pretty sure I can get that.

Training has been going well too. A bunch of us that are going to 8 Tuff have been meeting 2 days a week. Usually on Wed. In the PM and we run up through MT Adams trying to get some good hills in. Then we also meet on Sunday mornings and do a longer run. These runs have been a staple to my runs. I have been looking forward to these runs for sometime now. Don't get me wrong I would still do these runs on my own but it's sooooo much nicer having some guys with you. Typically on Sundays we have double digits running and most of them are legit runners that can really move. I'm pretty much on the slower end of the group but it's very helpful to run with faster guys. Couldn't ask for a better group of guys to run with!

Well I'm pretty excited for the next few months and ready for the cooler weather. I will try to get a post in after the races with results..... Hopefully GOOD results! Till then......

VT 50 Done and Gone!

I promised that I would follow up with a race report for my first 50 miler. Sorry it took so long. Had a nice long lazy week this past week, should have done it then. But here it is, Enjoy!

First of all I would like to thank Amanda for coming along with me on this journey. I know it wasnt the most coziest vacation ever, cause we ( when I say we I mean "I") decided to camp out the whole time on the road and in VT. We left early Friday morning around 6 AM and let me tell you I never seen so much rain in my life! Damn! It rained the whole time from Newport all the way to Geneva, NY. This was our stop for Friday evening. We staid at a little camp ground just about 10 min outside downtown Geneva. Amanda did a tri here a year or two ago and she thought it would be fun to stop by. As soon as we arrived we set up camp and went for a short 4 mile run, where I felt alittle dead in the legs but nothing not to be expected. It was a nice little run on some backroads. We decided to go to a local little pub that she ate at while up here for her race. I believe it was called Patricks or something Irish. But it was a nice little establishment and got my fill with wings, burger and a few beers. Got to bed somewhat early and up again by 8 to get on the road to VT.

This drive was alittle better. Overcast skies but not as rainy. As we hit the state line of VT I remember looking over to Amanda and saying "I didnt think VT was this hilly!" I mean I expected it to be some mountain ranges but mostly rolling hills. Boy was I wrong! It almost seemed as if we climbed the whole time we got into VT to our destination at the Ascutney Ski Resort in Brownsville. We finally arrived at the Resort after a few misadventures due to some road detours due to the affects of Hurricane Irene a few weeks before. We checked in pretty quickly and chatted with one of Amandas , Bob, from Cincinnati. Then we made our way to the Running Bear Camp Grounds. Once again set up camp quick and went for another short jaunt. Legs felt alittle looser but still heavy, just from the nerves im guessing. We later drove around and found a little pizza place to eat at. Had a steak hoagie, fries and a coke. I just tried to fill up on calories. Headed back and went to bed around 7:30 - 8 oclock-ish wgich is pretty early for me but since I had a 4 AM wake up call, i found it appropriate. Actually slept pretty well but 4 AM came quickly.

A quick shower and a peanut butter sandwich later, we were on the road to the start. Upon a arrivle I checked in again and asked about my drop bags. The answer I got was not what I was looking for. I was suppose to bring my drop bags to them the day before. Def a mistake on my past for not asking and just assuming. For most people this would have sucked but since I had Amanda there, she was able to take the bags to the appropriate aid stations. Once again, THANK YOU AMANDA!!! I would have been in a world of hurt if it was not for her. After calming my nerves and one last restroom break, it was almost time for the start. There was quite a few mountain bikers racing as well so they were starting in waves before the 50 miler runners started. (YES this was a mountain bike race as well as running.) Next thing I knew we, runners, were called to the start. After a few quick tips and remarks from the starter, we were off!

Basically in the begining I just tried to pick out a person/group that looked pretty relaxed and just tagged along. So I picked two guys talking and just ran with them. Looking at the runners in front of me, I noticed a few guys just flying. I mean it seemed as if they were taking off for a 5k! At this point I thought to myself "Dang, these guys are SERIOUS!!!" But I tried not to let it get me down. I just stuck to my plan and tried to relax as much as I could. About a mile into the race the group grew to about 6 guys and we also hit the first hill. Not just any hill, it was a hill that climbed for a good 2.5 - 3 miles! it was on a crushed gravel road so it wasnt terribly horrible, but it was a nice introduction that basically said "F-U!"

The first trails came up about mile 4 which was also the first aid station. Decided to skip that station and kept on going with the group. I was on a plan to take a GU about every 30 min. I also had my handheld water bottle filled with Nuun, so I was sipping on that. First aid station came up about mile 8 and it came up fast. I decided to refill water bottle but I couldnt get the top off and had a volunteer help me out. This is when I lost contact with the group and was basically by myself. I tried to remain calm and I did. I told myself I tould make up ground in the end. (at least thats what I kept telling myself.) So I just tried to enjoy the scenery and remain on pace. Miles past fairly quick and the first drop bag station came up at mile 12. Saw Amanda pretty quick and she refilled my bottle, which she also had trouble loosening the top, and refilled belt with gels. After I took off from that aid station, we dove into more trails. Now I mentioned before how Hurricane Irene hit this area a few weeks before. Well one would think the trails would have dried out alittle. NO! it was probably the muddiest race I have ran. There was multiple parts of the course that basically were 100-200 meters long that was just pure slop! I mean it felt as if your shoes were being sucked off your feet type of slop! The mountain bikers were getting stuck in it so it was hard to past them. At first I was trying to finesse my way through but after a few misteps I just plowed through as best as I could.

After being by myself for a few miles, I came up along a runner seeming to be struggling. He introduced himself as George and he decided to pick up his pace to stay along side of me. We ran together for a few miles, which was nice I guess. This was his 2nd VT 50, and he lived in the area. He explained to me the blue like tubes attached to every tree was a suction devise to get maple off of the trees for syrup. He was def pretty knowlegable about the area. He did have a flaw and it was that he wouldnt shut up. It was nice for a mile or so but then it just got plain annoying. Im not trying to be mean but sometimes thses people just talk about nothing pertaining the current situation. George, if your reading this, your nice guy but I really dont need to hear about your past GI issues!! So I decided to put in a small surge and left Georgy boy behind. Now looking back its sort of funny, but about a mile or two after I put the little surge in a girl with a skirt ran up along side me. She was all smiles and her stride looked effortless. "how you feeling?" she asked. "not bad, you?" I replied. "GREAT" is was she came back with a took off ahead. Almost seems as if Karma came around to me after complaining about George. It got me a little frazzled but I recouped and kept on chugging along. By this time we hit another aid station around 27 and this is where the 50ker's joined us. So now we were with bikers and 50ker's the rest of the way to the finish. One thing I did notice at this station was two guys that took off at the very start were getting into a van. This made me feel good about not going out to fast. Also at this point in the race I knew this is the farthest I have ever ran, so I did get alittle excited just from that.

The next aid station was about mile 32 and it was the 2nd drop bag station. I saw Amanda pretty quickly with my bag. At this point I was just covered in mud. So I decided to change my shoes, socks and shirt. I reapplied body glide (thank god) and refilled my nutrition needs. The next couple miles were less entertaining, I was mostly by myself and passing alot of bikers and 50kers. I was mainly concentrating on taking my gels when I needed to and keep on drinking to make sure I made it. Didnt want to let anyone down!!! Gels were def getting harder and harder to take. My stomach was handling them just fine but just the act of getting it down there was a task. So at some of the aid stations I was taking a half gel and eating a pb&j and sippin on coke. Boy oh Boy..... let me tell you about the coke. I never trained with it but once I took a sip of it I was hooked! It was a instant pick me up! From there on out I was looking forward to coke!

About the 45 mile mile mark I hit a wide open field and noticed two guys infront of me about 400 meters away. At first I just thought it was a couple 50ker's so I didnt make a big deal of it, but as I got closer I realized it was one of the guys that I started out with and his pacer (a pacer was a person who could run the last 10 miles with you.) This was a huge encouragement for me, I picked the pace up alittle and just tried to pass him with as much authority as I could. I just wanted him to think there was no way he could hang. I did just that, even though I was hurting the whole time. The next and last aid station seemed to take awhile to get to. it was right about mile 48. This point of the race was on a back road that people lined and cheered. I remember asking a lady "where in the hell is that last aid station?" she laughed and said right there and pointed. I turned my head and saw it perched up on a nice little incline. "S.O.B" I only had 2 more mile sto go but I was hurting. Got in and out of that aid station with just some water and sip of coke, again!

The last 2 miles were on some awesome trails. Made me think about all those articles I read about trails in Colorado and how beautiful they are and how I wish I could be out there running them. I could say that I almost shed a tear, but that aint manly! So ill just say I was just very happy I was almost done and so proud of all the hard work I put in. I could here the announcer at the finish and even though I couldnt see it I knew I was close. I finally made my way through some trails and out on top of a ski lope I emerged! "S.O.B!" again!!! I have to go down this whole ski slope on uneven ground and my quads feel as if they were ready to bust out of the skin! I made my way down as quick as possible with a smile I tried put on so it didnt look I was in too much pain. At the top of a little bunny slope I saw Amanda there cheering and yelling, so I tried to kick it in. I use the term "kick" loosely though, it was more of a gentle pick up. And finally crossed the line in 7 hours and 57 min. 27 min slower than I wanted but still very happy!

Overall it was a GREAT experience and Im glad I can write this for you all to read. I do alot of races every year and alot of them are for granted. The way I felt after this race made me thankful more than ever to be able to part-take in these events. I hope we all realize how lucky we are to be able to do the things we love and anytime we want. When dont realize it until we lose that freedom. Ill stop rambleing now....... Until next time, Run Hard!

2 weeks out from VT50!

Just wanted to write a little update about how my training has come along since my last post. Even though I dont think I have any followers at the moment, but oh well! Ill just keep typing and one day followers will come I guess.

So Im currently 2 weeks out from my big adventure. The VT 50 miler in Brownsville, VT! Have to say I have never been more relaxed going into a race, than I am now. Im guessing its the lack of structure in my training. Im basically just piling on the miles and hoping it works. I have never done a ultra before so I have really no clue on how to train. I can say that I have been more consistent with hile mileage weeks than I have ever been. 70 - 80 mile weeks for sometime now! I find this very comforting when I look back at my training. I have also made a improvement in my nutrition plan and have actually practiced it. Even though Amanda will say Im not even close to the amount I should be taking and shes right. I will need to take more on raceday and I plan on it! Been using GU and Nuun on my long runs. Body seems to like it, and has worked well with it.

This past past weekend was a rough one. Did 22 miles on Friday at Eastfork on the trails. Took about 3 hours. It was a perfect day for a run, cooler and a good breeze. Felt good and strong even at the end. It was a good confident booster for me! Then on Sat morning I did 20 miles on roads through Cinci, Cov and Newport. Legs were really tight for the first 5 miles, but started to loosen up as the run went on. Ran slower than I have in a long time but I was just wanting the miles. Took a ice bath that night, but water in house is still warm. Yes the cold water is warm. So the ice melts quicker than usual. So really a 22lb bag of ice got me 10 min. In the winter I can get 20-25 min easily with that size! Oh well, I also been wearing my SKINS more too.

This week started taper for me. I think my body and especially my mind needs it. One thing I have noticed though is my motivation was lacking for awhile. Dont know if its been all the miles or what. But it was getting harder and harder to get out the door. Amanda had her Ironman 2 weeks ago(which she did awesome in) and that reignited my motivation to a new high. Just watching all those people finish a marathon after a 2.4 mile swim and 112 mile bike is just insane! Basically all I need to think about is that and I can get my ASS out of bed for a 10 mile run. As of now I really cant wait to get out the door! Plus I just got a new pair of Saucony Kinvaras today (my 5th pair) so thats always a good reason to get a run in.

Thats it for now and hopefully I get another post in before the race!
